Series production of BIOCERAM AZUL® in Waiblingen




Kyoto/Esslingen, 10th September 2026. KYOCERA Fineceramics Medical GmbH has begun series production of ceramic ball heads made from BIOCERAM AZUL® at its Waiblingen site in Germany. This marks an important milestone for the company as it expands its activities in the field of endoprosthetics. Initial customer orders have already been manufactured and delivered from Waiblingen.
Highly automated manufacturing of ceramic ball heads
The new production facility in Waiblingen was specifically designed for the industrial manufacturing of ceramic ball heads and is based on a production concept consistently aligned with Industry 4.0 principles. Largely digitalised and automated processes enable paperless control and documentation of all manufacturing steps. This ensures a high process reliability, complete traceability, and consistently high quality. At the same time, this flexible and scalable production is essential for reliably meeting growing international customer demands.

BIOCERAM AZUL®: Kyocera’s high-performance ceramic material for ceramic ball heads
At the heart of the new series production is BIOCERAM AZUL®. The material builds on the company’s decades of experience in development and manufacture of ceramic components for medical applications.
Kyocera has been developing ceramic solutions for the medical technology sector for more than five decades. BIOCERAM AZUL® has been in use on the Japanese market since 2015. With the current series production in Waiblingen, Kyocera is now establishing the industrial foundation for further international expansion and collaboration with implant manufacturers worldwide.

First customer orders already delivered
Since the establishment of KYOCERA Fineceramics Medical GmbH in 2024, the company has continuously expanded its engagement with international manufacturers of orthopaedic implants. Numerous customers and potential partners have already visited the new production facility in Waiblingen to learn first-hand about the manufacturing concept and BIOCERAM AZUL®.
With the production and delivery of the first customer orders, this market expansion has now reached another important milestone. At the same time, Kyocera is in discussions with other implant manufacturers regarding the use of ceramic ball heads from Waiblingen.
International exchange with the orthopaedic community
The new series production and BIOCERAM AZUL® will also be the focus of Kyocera’s upcoming international congress activities.
The first event will be the annual congress of the international society for technology in arthroplasty (ISTA), taking place from 15 to 18 September 2026 at BMW Welt in Munich, Germany (Kyocera Booth # 10).
There, Kyocera will host a scientific symposium featuring international experts in orthopaedics and biomechanics, led by Professor Javad Parvizi.
Other events include the Deutscher Kongress für Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie (DKOU, German congress for orthopaedics and trauma surgery) from 20 to 23 October 2026 in Berlin, Germany (Kyocera Booth # B112) and the annual meeting of the American association of hip and knee surgeons (AAHKS) from 5 to 8 November 2026 in Dallas, Texas (Kyocera Booth # 1602).
These congresses offer Kyocera the opportunity to further deepen its dialogue with implant manufacturers, surgeons, scientists, and other partners regarding ceramic materials, modern manufacturing technologies and future requirements in endoprosthetics.
